Every star system with an established government imposes controls over goods entering and leaving, regulating the flow of merchandise, imposing tariffs, and ensuring that no prohibited or dangerous cargo crosses its borders without oversight.

For corporations, customs can be either a bureaucratic obstacle or a tool for controlling competitors. In systems with strict regulations, clearing cargo may involve extensive paperwork, import duties, and thorough inspections that delay operations.
